A Product Development Engineer is sought to join an innovative engineering business in Gateshead, Tyne & Wear, supporting the development, enhancement, and lifecycle management of advanced rail safety and surveillance systems.
The Product Development Engineer, Gateshead, Tyne & Wear, will be expected to act as the technical expert for key product lines, driving product improvements, supporting customers, and ensuring products remain compliant with industry and safety standards. Working closely with engineering, production, and commercial teams, you will play a key role in delivering innovative solutions that support the company's long-term technology roadmap.
Responsibilities include:
•	Act as the technical expert for the company's rail safety and surveillance product portfolio. 
•	Support product development activities from concept through to production and in-service support. 
•	Provide technical input for customer tenders, proposals, and new product initiatives. 
•	Investigate, diagnose, and resolve hardware, software, and system-level technical issues. 
•	Develop and maintain technical documentation, product datasheets, system schematics, and test specifications. 
•	Ensure products comply with relevant industry standards, including Safety Integrity Level (SIL) and cybersecurity requirements. 
•	Work with cross-functional teams to identify and implement product improvements. 
•	Support production with technical guidance, validation, and product release activities. 
•	Build strong customer relationships and provide technical support during product lifecycle activities. 
•	Contribute to technology roadmaps and continuous product innovation. 
Key skills & experience:
•	Degree in Electronics Engineering, Systems Engineering, or equivalent industry experience. 
•	Experience in product development within electronics, embedded systems, or engineering environments. 
•	Knowledge of electronic hardware design and system integration. 
•	Experience supporting IP-based CCTV, video, or networked electronic systems. 
•	Understanding of communication protocols including Ethernet, TCP/IP, RS232, and RS485. 
•	Strong technical problem-solving and troubleshooting skills. 
•	Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities. 
•	Experience working across the full product lifecycle would be advantageous. 
•	Knowledge of C/C++, Safety Integrity Level (SIL), or rail technologies would be beneficial. 
•	Self-motivated with strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
