Job description

A market leader in ruggedised electro-mechanical equipment are looking for a Lead Design Engineer - Mechanical / Electronic based at their site in Fareham, Hampshire. They develop and produce electro-mechanical products on site for a range of industries.

This is a varied role that will include making a hands on contribution to the design effort on projects, as well as providing technical leadership and direction to members of the design team. This is not a ‘people management' role though. So you won't be responsible for hiring and firing, pay reviews etc.

Around 80% of the design work is mechanical design (enclosures) for their products. So you must have a strong background in mechanical design for electronic products, EMC, Thermal's etc. Ideally in this Lead role, you will have some experience of / exposure to electronic and electrical design too.

As Lead Design Engineer - Mechanical / Electronic reporting into the Head of Engineering, you will work closely with the engineering and commercial teams to identify and prioritise product requirements, provide technical input with respect to commercialisation as well as building and executing engineering processes and practices with customer feedback as a cornerstone.

In an organisation where we "roll our sleeves up and get stuck in", the successful candidate will need to have a real hands-on approach.

Your primary responsibilities will be as the domain expert and advocate for the development and full implementation of the overall design package. This will include design, verification, cost analysis, drawing development, managing project schedules and working within the cross functional teams. Of course you can't achieve all of this without the support of the team and so you will be responsible for their technical output, including task allocation and monitoring, as well as providing mentoring and help to identify and support their training requirements.

Skill set for the Lead Design Engineer - Mechanical / Electronic:
> Mechanical design using a professional CAD tool
> Electronics Design (Analogue/Digital)
> Strong technical understanding of electro-mechanical devices and the development.

This is a great opportunity to join a well-established, successful organisation, in a broad position that will allow you to play a lead role in the design of their latest products. You will be taking some responsibility for mentoring / driving less experienced members of the team. Whilst time remaining hands on with design.
