What are the Primary Responsibilities of a Managing Director?

The job description covers the basic duties and responsibilities for a Managing Director job in an engineering or high-technology business. The managing director holds ultimate responsibility for the day to day running of the company and its strategic direction.

Duties include, but are not limited to of the Managing Director:

  • Full management responsibility for all business operations including P&L
  • Develop and set the overall strategy and direction alongside the Board of Directors
  • Plan and align the short, mid and long-term objectives to achieve the strategy
  • Lead, motivate and guide senior members of the company, develop a high performing managerial team
  • Direct the management of product development including concept definition, product and technology road maps, long range planning and sustaining engineering.
  • Communicate a vision for the company internally and externally (events, exhibitions)
  • Set company-wide KPI’s to gauge company performance in all areas
  • Provide leadership to process improvements and corrective actions 
  • Ensure compliance with company standards for revenues, efficiencies, cost control, waste reduction, quality, safety and complete on-time delivery
  • Set company budgets and forecasts alongside the finance department
  • Reporting results to the shareholders on a quarterly and annual basis.
  • Analyse opportunities for growth in market segments to drive profitability.
  • Direct the management of product and technology development including the management of engineering R & D and marketing resources.
  • Succession planning for senior members of the company to ensure all departments are managed continuously.
  • Responsible for establishing and meeting commitments for on-time, on-budget product line delivery for new products, including quality and documentation.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with customers and outside agencies, third party providers, etc.
  • Ensure that business is run in the most efficient and effective manner, to obtain the best possible return on assets and capital employed and to build a robust, long-term sustainable asset base for the business

Background of the Managing Director

  • Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree in Business Administration often preferred and demonstrable background in exceeding expectations and achievements. 
  • Proven track record of successfully managing similar sized organisations.
  • Target driven and results focused individual.
  • Natural leader and motivator of people.
  • Excellent communication skills, organisational skills, analytical skills and critical thinking abilities

 
What are the salary expectations of a Managing Director?

Salary expectations for a Managing Director are high. Managing Director salaries in small businesses would typically start around £70K per annum. Average salaries for Managing Directors would be between £100K-£200K however for many the salary range will be even higher.
