Job description

A high technology electronics business seeks a Technical Director to take responsible for generating, developing and implementing the local engineering strategies to ensure the business meets its ambitious goals.

As the site engineering head and technical leader, the individual will play a critical role in driving and shaping the future growth. The Technical Director will be accountable for R&D, development and customer engineering, managing a mixed team of hardware, software, and mechanical designers.

Technical Director Summary
> Engineering and technical leadership.
> Responsible for research and development and input into product roadmaps and identifying new product opportunities.
> Responsible for on time development of all products.
> Monthly and quarterly reporting of development status and possible issues.
> On time development milestones.

Main duties/responsibilities of the Technical Director include:

> Management of a growing multi-discipline development and engineering team, comprising of a diverse range of engineers including hardware, firmware, mechanical /cad, and sustainment.
> Support the definition and develop the future product roadmap. Assessment of customer and market requirements, taking ideas from concept to reality.
> Execution of all development activities.
> Budget responsibility for the engineering cost centre.
> Ensure all new products are developed in a manner that ensures swift time to market, compliance with the marketing requirements specification and adherence to cost budgets.
> Develop tools and processes that reduce the engineering time and improve the robustness, quality, and reliability of the final designs.
> Maintaining an awareness of the industry and regulatory standards.
> Measure and monitor all objectives.
> Participation with sales/marketing and to ensure that the skill set within engineering meets customer needs.
> Ensuring that there is a continuous professional development of all Engineering staff and the development of key staff progression plans.
> Maintaining a resource planning systems that ensure that projects are staffed in a timely manner with suitably qualified Engineers.
> Maintain a working knowledge of new technologies which may improve operations.
> Setting the 'design standard' for the engineering team.

Candidate Requirements for the Technical Director

> Suitably qualified in an engineering discipline, ideal candidates will be inspirational leaders of high technology engineering departments, demonstrating success in creating market focused, complex, electronic hardware-based products.
> A proven track record of managing electronic product development and consistently achieving time to market is crucial. The individual is likely to be an existing Technical Director, Engineering Director or possible an Engineering Manager whom is seeking the breadth of a large engineering team.
> You will have led new innovation and delivered under tight time constraints with many competing priorities.
> A rounded, versatile manager with the drive, enthusiasm and "can do" attitude to help shape their engineering future.
> Able to achieve delivery of the plan reducing the cycle time for NPIs and are constantly challenging to improve the existing dynamic.
> Experience in the aerospace, defence, and highly regulated environments
> Educated to at least degree level, preferably in Electronic Engineering. Ideally MSc/MBA and project management qualifications e.g. Prince.
