Position: Group CTO

The Chairman of a new UK Consoles Group consisting initially of Digico, Calrec and Allen& Heath contacted Redline to meet with the new Group CEO, Chairman and their investors Electra Partners to discuss an assignment for a new Group CTO.

The role discussed was for a ‘finished electronic product’ CTO to look at the existing businesses strategically and tactically and work with the board in aligning the businesses from a technical stand point, ensuring that lean processes were implemented and getting all business ready for further technical and numerical enhancement. A strong man motivator and hands on expert within their field. The right person would have an aura about them that would ensure immediate ‘buy in’ from the existing team.

Post the meeting Redline were appointed to run a Direct Search campaign where they would resource, interview, psychometrically test and short list the industries best CTO’s in accordance with the brief.

After resourcing and interviewing 17 interested candidates Redline were in a position to short-list 4 candidates to the Group CEO that met the brief perfectly. After due diligence and a number of interviews the Digico Group offered their preferred candidate and he subsequently accepted the offer.

Atmel
Senior Engineering Director

Atmel is a leading manufacturer of microcontrollers, advanced logic and touch technology semiconductors. Leveraging one of the industry's broadest intellectual property (IP) technology portfolios, providing complete system solutions.

History: Atmel acquired Quantum Research Group, a start-up based in Hampshire, whom were developing touch technology. Atmel invested heavily in the R&D organisation with the aim of leveraging the technology in the wireless arena. After the two year earn out period the Director of Engineering of the Touch Business Unit resigned. The Touch business had just started to take-off with key design wins in a number of the major handset, tablet and PC manufacturers.

Redline were contacted by the Snr VP HR and Snr VP Touch Business Unit who were located at the corporate HQ in San Jose, USA with the brief to identify a new Snr Director of Engineering to manage the Touch engineering activity. Multiple challenges existed with the project. Due to the sensitive nature of the role both internally within the Touch BU and externally within the Atmel’s investor community, Redline we’re asked to deliver a shortlist in four weeks of the best Technical Directors in the wireless communication or consumer arena. These pre-screened and interviewed candidates were not told who the end client was prior to the 1st interview with Atmel.

Position: Senior Director of Engineering

Reporting to the SVP and General Manager of the Touch Business the position assumes overall responsibility for generating, developing and implementing global engineering strategies to ensure the business met its ambitious goals. As the site head and technical lead of the fastest growing business (BU), the individual will play a critical role in driving and shaping the company’s future growth. Responsible for the Engineering team across worldwide locations, the Director is accountable for the research, development and customer engineering deployment of all touch products.

H Young Holdings is a distributor of branded products, many of the brands managed are owned by the group. In the case of those that are not, H Young have distribution or licence agreements with the companies that own the brand and act as the custodian for agreed territories.

Over half of the group sales are brands sold into the sports and leisure markets, their philosophy is to develop a balanced portfolio of distribution businesses, each performing a similar task but in different market places. In each case great emphasis is placed upon their reputation for customer service and they take pride in the understanding of the development of leading quality brands and their operational ability to distribute them to customers efficiently.

Electronics Division – H Young Holdings
The Electronics Division consists of three sub-divisions: H Young Holdings Powerline and Locator, all operating from the facility at High Wycombe.

H Young Holdings represents major electronic component manufacturers including Nippon Chemi-Con, Taiyo Yuden , Fujitsu Takamisawa and New Japan Radio and supplies the Major OEM's and EMS's in the UK.

Powerline, a specialist distributor of power supplies, offers a wide range of products from well-known brands such as Lambda, ETA Power, UMEC and Ferrus. Powerline also offers an in-house design service to customers.

Total turnover for the group is c£100M, the electronics division is c£20M.

The Position: Chief Executive

Reporting to the owner of H Young Holding, the role of Chief Executive, Electronics Division, was to take responsibility for the Electronics business which comprises three parts, Young ECC, Powerline and Locator, all based from a shared freehold facility in High Wycombe.

This role was to take overall control of the operation and strategic direction of the business, maximising turnover and profitability across the companies. To create, implement and achieve a strategy to deliver the above looking at all aspects of the business from organic growth, merger, acquisition expansion etc.

The assignment was to identify and hire a UK Managing Director responsible for the technical, commercial and operational aspects over three sites across the UK.

The professional Group designs, manufacturers and markets loudspeakers and electronics used by audio professionals in concert halls, stadiums, airports and other buildings and recording, broadcast, cinema and music reproduction applications.

Founded in 1973, Soundcraft first made its mark with the launch of the Series 1, the first mixing console in a flightcase. Back in the early 70's, the music touring business was just beginning - and the transportable mixing desk quickly became popular among the bands and the new PA companies that were springing up to rent out sound equipment.

Today, Soundcraft has a network of 88 distributors selling and supporting its products world-wide. Part of the Harman Pro Group, The Soundcraft Group now employees 450 staff and includes BSS Audio and AMEK.

The Position: Managing Director

Reporting to the CEO, the role of Managing Director was a replacement for an incumbent who was unaware of the process being undertaken. The individual was subsequently moved to a new role managing one of the US businesses. The then Managing Director had a strong sales and marketing background and had consistently achieved the companies’ revenue targets. The Harman Pro Group decide they need a new Managing Director with a more technology bias as the company was not moving into the new digital technology arena as rapidly as they desired. Redline was tasked with finding a replacement in a highly confidential manner.

This role was to take control of the Soundcraft Group with responsibility for the operation and strategic direction of the business, whilst maximising turnover and profitability across the companies. To create, implement and achieve a strategy to deliver the new digital technologies, which the company lacked, thus strengthening the long-term viability and success of the business.
